Criminology is the intersection of theory, research, and practice. The first writing assignment focuses on the relationship between theory and research. The goal of this assignment is to demonstrate how research is used to support or refute the theory.

The first step is to choose a theory. At this point we have not discussed the full range of theories, so where is a list of possible choices.

With theory in hand, the second step is to find three articles that test your chosen theory. These must be articles that present empirical data, operationalize the concepts from the theory, and compare the empirical results to theoretical expectations. You cannot choose articles that summarize large swaths of research (literature reviews), or secondary sources (textbooks, readers, or websites).

You cannot use the articles from the text. They must be articles you find on google scholar or Academic Search Complete. Google Scholar is an excellent resource for this exercise (as a search engine of academic literature). Most articles can be obtained when on-campus or off-campus when using the remote login. Do not pay money for an article.

Step three: Read the articles. Understand the research questions, methods (sample and variables), results, and implications.

Step four: Write. Each paper should have three specific sections. This should end up about 4-5 pages.

Explain your chosen theory. Note all concepts, how they are related to one another, and how they are related to crime.
Summarize each article. What were the research questions? How did they go about answering the questions? And what were the results?
Generalize the results to make statements about the empirical validity of the theory. To what extent is the theory supported by the research that you reviewed?

Write 1-2 paragraphs reflecting oncaring and culture in the NP role. Provide one specific example of how you achieved the weekly objectives. What personal values, if any, were challenged this week?

This assignment provides you with an opportunity to discuss an insight you gained in this unit by comparing the development of two Early Medieval cultures.
For this assignment, choose two specific Western cultures between 632-1000 C.E. Using these, build a comparison that identifies at least three differences and three similarities from political leadership, and economic and social and/or cultural elements. Step 3: Complete your research using the guidelines on ethical and rigorous research you reviewed in Step 1:
Choose two specific times and locations to research. Specific times and locations are necessary to avoid generalization.
Avoid all generalization beyond the data you have researched on those times and locations, including projections of your own views.
Avoid anachronism, which is the use of data or circumstances from today as if they are evidence of what the past means. Form your conclusions using only data from the past.
Compare like terms, meaning the same kinds of things, in a point-by-point comparison (rather than writing about one culture and then the other).
Consider artifacts and other cultural products.
Use strong sources as indicated above.
Include at least one comparison drawn from each of the following: 1) politics; 2) social organization or cultural products; and 3) the economy.
Step 4: Prepare a reflection on your use of the guidelines for ethical and rigorous historical research. What was your experience of attempting to limit generalization, anachronism, and use of weak sources? The assignment is not considered complete without this component.
Step 5: Write your essay in this order without headings: introduction, comparisons, reflection, conclusions. Your essay must be at least 500 words in length.

Rationale: The purpose of the Final Report is to analyze a specific complex social problem and its connection to the workplace using a systems thinking approach. The purpose of the report is not to solve the problem.

Format: How you design and structure your report is up to you – it depends on the topic you have chosen and the information you have. A discussion on the stakeholders involved in the problem and their roles and how they play a part in the systems that are involved in the problem you have chosen. This should also include research. 5. A discussion on how the iceberg model can help us look at all the different levels involved in the problem (events, patterns, underlying structures, mental models). This should include an iceberg model diagram and a few paragraphs explaining it. (CP Task 11.1)

6. An overall discussion on how the project has helped you analyze your specific problem in a way that can lead to the construction of possible solutions. 7. A list of references.

1. Introduction
Glaciated landscapes such as Ireland’s contain a variety of glacial sediments and landforms that have previously been described in many publications.
